Overview

Wearable audio as part of personal identity.

Elara is a wearable audio concept that explores the space between consumer electronics and personal accessories.

The project investigates how wireless earbuds can become part of a user's visual identity rather than appearing as purely technical devices.

Challenge

Creating a stronger emotional presence for everyday audio.

Most wireless earbuds prioritize technical packaging and miniaturization, often resulting in products that look interchangeable. The challenge was to create a product with a stronger emotional presence while maintaining the familiarity and usability expected from everyday audio devices.

Design Goals

A recognizable earbud with a more expressive role.

  • Create a distinctive visual identity.
  • Explore the relationship between technology and jewelry.
  • Maintain recognizable earbud usability.
  • Develop a product suitable for everyday wear.
  • Balance aesthetics, comfort, and manufacturability.

Product Direction

The device becomes part of the user's appearance.

The concept combines a simple earbud body with a sculptural ear-cuff structure. Rather than hiding the product, the design intentionally embraces visibility and transforms the device into part of the user's appearance.

Wearability

A multi-loop structure creates support and a unique silhouette.

The multi-loop structure wraps around the ear to create a unique silhouette while distributing contact points across the ear. This approach explores alternative ways of supporting wearable electronics beyond traditional in-ear solutions.

CMF Strategy

Soft surfaces contrast with metallic structure.

Soft neutral surfaces are paired with metallic structural elements to create contrast between the electronic and accessory components. The material strategy aims to balance technical precision with a more expressive visual character.

Manufacturing Considerations

Separate components allow different production approaches.

The electronic housing and structural support system are treated as separate components, allowing different material and production approaches. This separation supports both manufacturing flexibility and future design variations.
